[cups.general] Is cups a total mystery?

I don't know what documentation you refer to but the cups documentation 
for your site is available at http://localhost:631/documentation.html.  
If you cannot connect to localhost:631 then the documentation is also 
available at http://cups.org/documentation.php.

For your particular problem, http://cups.org/doc-1.1/sam.html#LPD might 
be useful.
