FreeBSD install doesn't print via gs

Hi. I'm running out of hair to tear out, so I figured I'd drop in here and share
the frustration. Don't thank me all at once. :)

OS: FreeBSD 6.0-RELEASE
Printer: HP Deskjet 5850

Short version is that I can communicate with the printer, but not using the
(correct) foomatic .ppd file.

I can from the same system print to a LaserJet 4ML using the .ppd file
downloaded from linuxprinting.org.

I ran a similar test on the 4ML (using the Foomatic .ppd and the one from
linuxprinting, respectively:

Here are two log files. One is of a successful test (using the linuxprinting.org
..PPD file):

In the second, I set up the printer to the installed (non-working) Foomatic
filter and try to print a test page again:
