[cups.general] PDFs Do Not Print

As further testing, I tried to connect to the IPP port
on the Gestetner DSc38u. I found in Cups Manager that
the printer stopped as soon as I sent a file to it,
and looking at it in the Cups web interface, it says:
"Downstairs_Color2 "/usr/lib/cups/backend/ipp failed"

.... so I checked that file, and it was set to root
only read-write-execute. So I set it to 755,
restarted the Cups and printer and tried the document
again... same failure.

So I tried adding it as a socket printer pointing at
printerip:631 and that failed too, inexplicably.

But I tried the Generic PCL5c and it prints clearly,
although the color balance is way off. (too yellow)
There doesn't seem to be any way to do color
correction in Cups. Also when I try to print multiple
copies, the Gestetner DSc38u's light just flashes
forever and never prints. (I waited an hour)

And now my new Lexmark D700 has started always
printing 1/4" below the very top of the page, no
matter where the document's margins are. It ignores
the top margin setting, but respects the other margin
settings, inexplicably. When I adjust margins
manually, it resets them to zero all the way down
after I hit OK. It insists that all margins be
manually set, and all to 0, even after I alter them.

I've tried modifying the *PageRegion and
*ImageableArea settings in the ppd, and these moved
the text around, but none would move the text -down-.

And needless to say, my Gestetner DSm622 still ignores
multiple page command. (-n 5) Never prints more than
one copy, under any circumstances. (command-line or
KPrint)

This is pretty discouraging; 4 of my 5 printers do
not work properly, and I am thinking about abandoning
Cups. Are there any other print servers I could try?
